Metrics details. The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of pomegranate juice POM supplementation on the levels of selected pro-inflammatory cytokines, hepcidin and markers of iron metabolism in well-trained rowers. The double-blind placebo-controlled study included 19 members of the Polish Rowing Team. The subjects performed a m test on the rowing ergometer at the start of the project baseline and end of follow-up period. Blood samples from the antecubital vein were obtained three times during each trial: prior to the exercise, one minute after the test, and following a 24 h recovery. A significant increase in IL-6 concentration was also observed 24 h post-exercise.

Over the last decade, various studies have linked pomegranate Punica granatum Linn , a fruit native to the Middle East, with type 2 diabetes prevention and treatment. This review focuses on current laboratory and clinical research related to the effects of pomegranate fractions peels, flowers, and seeds and some of their active components on biochemical and metabolic variables associated with the pathologic markers of type 2 diabetes. This review systematically presents findings from cell culture and animal studies as well as clinical human research. One key mechanism by which pomegranate fractions affect the type 2 diabetic condition is by reducing oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. Fasting blood glucose levels were decreased significantly by punicic acid, methanolic seed extract, and pomegranate peel extract. Known compounds in pomegranate, such as punicalagin and ellagic, gallic, oleanolic, ursolic, and uallic acids, have been identified as having anti-diabetic actions. Furthermore, the juice sugar fraction was found to have unique antioxidant polyphenols tannins and anthocyanins , which could be beneficial to control conditions in type 2 diabetes.

Methods: In this parallel, block-randomized clinical trial, we administered commercially-available pomegranate polyphenol or placebo pills twice per day for one week to adult inpatients in a comprehensive rehabilitation setting starting approximately 2 weeks after stroke. Pills contained 1 g of polyphenols derived from whole pomegranate, equivalent to levels in approximately 8 oz of juice. Placebo pills were similar to the pomegranate pills except that they contained only lactose. Of the patients that were screened, 22 were eligible and 16 were randomized 8 per group.
O, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala , India. Pomegranate is a widely used plant having medicinal properties. In this review, we have mainly focused on the already published data from our laboratory pertaining to the effect of methanol extract of pericarp of pomegranate PME and have compared it with other relevant literatures on Punica. The results from our studies and from various other studies support the fact that pomegranate fruit is indeed a source of biologically active compounds. Punica granatum L.
