Even though the characters in F. Specifically, through the wealth-greedy lives of three characters, Jay Gatsby, Tom Buchanan, and Daisy Buchanan, Fitzgerald portrays that a materialistic lifestyle does not lead to happiness and causes a decline of the American Dream. A character who holds firmly to an illusion of the American Dream is Jay Gatsby. He is dishonest with Daisy from the start by persuading her into thinking he is rich. The two have an affair before he goes back to war and he is shocked that she has moved on when he returns.

When Americans reach this point they become discouraged and are to afraid to work toward their goal of being successful. Today lower class citizens are discriminated and put down because they are not as rich as other people and cannot afford what others can, leading to a feeling of envy and doubt. Instead of hope, a word that brought us a new president, we have entered an era of envy and doubt.
The last couple years my faith in that has been tested for sure. Today there are many problems with the economy; there are many people out there who think there's no such thing as the American Dream anymore. The American Dream is that every United States citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, initiative, and happiness. But many wonder if it is still alive today. Many studies have proven that the American dream is still alive today.
